MARZANO UNIVERSE
The discovery
“Terror in the Depths”
Chapter 1: Family
On the peaceful shores of southern Italy, in picturesque Porto Venere, lived a man whose name echoed like a legend: Leone Marzano. This was no simple fisherman; he was an artist of the waters, whose life had been intertwined with the sea since the first breaths of childhood. His intrepid heart yearned for something greater than the familiar Mediterranean could offer. Leone dreamed of setting sail for unknown horizons, of becoming a fearless explorer.
Leone Marzano learned from an early age to love the vast blue that kissed the horizon of his home. His father, Pietro, was a fisherman with calloused hands and eyes that reflected the brilliance of the ocean, and his mother, Maria, farmed the land and cared for his younger sister Sofia with the same dedication and love with which she cared for the entire family.
Leone’s childhood was filled with fascinating stories about the sea—stories of sea monsters, brave sailors, and mysterious lands beyond the waves. Each night, as the village fell asleep under a blanket of stars, Pietro would tell his son about the adventures and dangers he faced on the water.
Pietro: "The sea is both our friend and our challenge, Leone. It gives us food and a path, but we must never underestimate it."
Curious and attentive, Leone absorbed every word, every gesture his father made as he mended the nets or prepared the boat for the next journey. He knew that sooner or later the waves would call him to join the eternal dance between man and sea.
When Leone turned fifteen, he began to accompany his father on his fishing trip. The early mornings were cold and the work hard, but he didn't mind. He felt alive among the waves, learning to read the weather and the tides, feeling the salty foam on his face. It was a life of hard work, but each fish pulled into the boat was an achievement, a step closer to Leone's dream: to have his own boat.
Leone: "Father, one day I will sail farther than we can see. I want to discover what lies beyond the horizon." Pietro, with a proud smile and a serious look, would always respond: "And you will, my son. But remember to respect the sea. It is the greatest teacher you will ever have." Meanwhile, his mother, Maria, showed him how to care for the land. Leone divided his time between the sea and dry land, where he helped his mother with the harvest. Maria taught him about the cycles of nature, about how to plant and harvest, about the importance of each element in the creation of life. Maria: "Everything is connected, Leone. The same sea that calls to you is fed by the rains that fall on our soil. Caring for the land is also respecting the sea." As Leone Marzano grew into a young man, his life became increasingly intertwined with the waters and lands he loved so much. But with maturity came challenges and losses that would define his character and resilience. The first blow came unexpectedly and cruelly. His mother, Maria, always the pillar of strength and tenderness in the family, began to fall ill during a particularly harsh winter. The illness dragged on slowly, draining the energy and vigor that she had always radiated. Leone and Pietro cared for her devotedly, but despite all their efforts, Maria passed away the following spring, leaving a painful silence in their home and in their hearts.
Leone, as he helped his father prepare the boat for a morning of fishing, could not help but think about how fragile life seemed:
Leone: "She loved the sea as much as the land, father. It seems unfair that she left when there was still so much to live for."
Pietro: "The sea gives us and the sea takes away, Leone. Your mother knew this, and she lived each day with joy. We must do the same, in her honor."
